Tufted wool rugs
Why did Tree of Colors choose tufted wool rugs handcrafted in India?
I first tried tufting in Bruxelles, I was interested in the technique and was curious about how it works and what are the possibilities with it. After one class, where I did my own logo, I realized immediately that first of all, I will never be an expert in tufting. Indeed, it requires much patience and technique that you need to acquire with a lot of practice. And that would have meant that I should have had to split my time between mastering this technique and cleaning my Moroccan rugs. I chose the second option. Secondly, the technique is very precise: you can do any shape with tufting. The limit is only your imagination, which is an absolute plus for me. I love drawing and designing new rugs but too often, my Moroccan artisans tell me that my designs are not possible to make. Plus, there is a real struggle to get not only the right shapes but also the right colors. Both problems utterly fixed with Indian hand-tufting. I can design anything and choose the colors I want, and the results are amazing.
In October 2025, I ordered my first samples whose design was based on my best-seller 'Pamplemousse' rug, from Bhadohi, India. I knew from the start that I wanted to use only natural wool, hence the use of the New Zealand sheep wool, which is dyed directly in Bhadohi. The companies I contacted and chose to work with are certified that no child labour is used in the production of the rugs.
Although they have a completely different look and feel to Moroccan rugs, Indian hand-tufted rugs offer the same handmade craftsmanship quality and authenticity, with a more modern touch, which I think is complementary to Moroccan Berber rugs.
What is a tufted rug?
Tufted rugs are handmade using a tufting gun to rapidly punch the wool yarn through a backing fabric (like a canvas) stretched on a frame. This technique creates loops or cut piles from the back side and the whole work is secured with latex glue and a secondary fabric backing for durability. If it's a cut pile, then the wool on the front of the rug is cut with razors to finish the look.
The craftsmanship from Bhadohi, India
Bhadohi, India is the capital of handcrafted rugs in the region of Uttar Pradesh, India. These artisans have honed their skills in rug making over centuries, acquiring know-how of new techniques, including tufting.
Which wool is used?
The wool used to make the hand-tufted rugs is sheep wool from New Zealand, known for its softness and high quality.
Which interiors tufted wool rugs are for?
Given the very modern, short and dense pile and chic look of the tufted wool rugs, I recommend to use them in dining areas, office rooms and bedrooms in contemporary and minimalist homes.
