Our Moroccan Berber Rugs
Why choose your Moroccan Berber rug from Tree of Colors?
- Authentic craftsmanship: handmade Berber rugs from Morocco
At Tree of Colors, each Moroccan Berber rug is the product of traditional know-how passed down through generations. Our Berber rugs are entirely handwoven by women artisans who, with meticulous care and patience, form each knot, making
each of our pieces unique and of exceptional quality.
By choosing a Tree of Colors Berber rug, you contribute to the Moroccan economy thanks to our long-standing partnerships with various Berber cooperatives located in the
Atlas Mountains and in the rural region between Rabat and Fez. This commitment
aims to preserve their traditions while supporting communities that rely primarily on handicrafts for their livelihood.
- Uniques pieces: exclusive colors and designs
The main advantage of Tree of Colors Berber rugs lies in their perfect originality. Unlike mass-produced, automated rugs from large retailers, each of our Berber rugs is unique, created through the creativity of our weavers. Choosing one of our Berber rugs is not just about adding color to your home; it's about acquiring a one-of-a-kind piece that tells its own story—the story of the
weavers and the story of Morocco. No imitations or copies here; our Moroccan
Berber rugs are exclusive. Their authentic character and handcrafted charm bring a touch of warmth to any room, whether modern, minimalist, vintage, or
traditional.
- Respect for Moroccan craftsmanship: quality, tradition, and meticulous finishing.
Before being shipped or delivered to the customer, we meticulously inspect, brush, and wash each rug. These steps demonstrate the quality of the wool used, revealing its softness. Our Berber rugs become fluffy, plush, and silky. This process is essential for us, as it allows you to be amazed when you unpack your rug. It's
ready to be placed in your home, clean, vibrant, and true to the promised
quality. Our Berber rugs value authenticity while respecting the artisans. Our
care at every key stage of the process guarantees a durable Berber rug, crafted
in true Moroccan tradition, a rug destined to be a part of your life for years
to come.
How to choose your Berber rug?
- Choosing the right size
To choose the ideal size for your Berber rug, we advise you to determine the
dimensions of your chosen room by measuring it and remembering to take into
account the size of any important furniture (for example, if you want to place your Berber rug in a living room, it is essential to measure your sofa). Many customers tend to underestimate the size of their room and therefore end up choosing a Berber rug that is too small. This not only unbalances your interior but also makes the space feel smaller. Conversely, a larger rug immediately
creates a warmer and more harmonious atmosphere, which helps to structure the
room and give it a sense of spaciousness. Whether it's for a dining room, bedroom, office, or living room, it's important to match the rug to the available space and the furniture. Don't be afraid to use a large Berber rug; it's often this size that creates the most beautiful effect.
- Choosing the atmosphere
Next, focus on the ambiance you want to create in your home. If you opt for one of
our neutral Berber rugs, it will blend seamlessly into your interior design,
adding warmth and softness. A Berber rug characterized as being more understated will complement your room while maintaining your personal style, a subtle yet assertive presence. Alternatively, you can choose a vibrant Berber rug, which will become the centerpiece of your home. Your Berber rug will immediately draw the eye with its character and energy.
- Choosing the colors
After the atmosphere comes the choice of colors. You need to determine whether your
preference leans more towards warm colors like ochre, beige, and terracotta, or
towards cool colors such as blue, green, and gray. Next, you have two options: either you prefer a "matchy-matchy" look that harmonizes with the colors already present in your room, or you opt for a more complementary approach that creates contrast and dynamism in your decor.
Tree of Colors offers an incredible selection, making it easy to find the perfect rug for you.
- Listen to your instincts
Now you've reached the final and perhaps most important step: listening to your
instincts, following your intuition. In some cases, the rug that immediately appeals to you is simply the right one, even if you haven't followed any rules. It's the one that resonates with you because it best reflects your personality and your desired atmosphere. Ultimately, your home should reflect you and make you feel good every day.
How to care for yourBerber rug?
To keep your Berber rug soft and clean, I recommend vacuuming it regularly. Even
several times a week if you have pets (who will most certainly love your rug and enjoy the best naps on it). Vacuuming will remove the dust that can easily accumulate in the wool. Our Berber rugs are made of natural sheep's wool, not synthetic. So, yes, natural wool can shed when you walk on it, but this is a natural process. Especially at first, because when you receive your rug, it
will have been freshly brushed and washed by us. Therefore, it will take a little time for the wool to settle.
If you want to keep your rug extra fluffy, I recommend using a metal brush for
dogs/cats, but not too often. Once or twice a year is perfectly fine. If you get a stain on your Berber rug (or have a little mischief from your baby), the best thing to do is remove it and blot up as much as possible with paper towels before applying anything to the rug. Then, I recommend using warm (not boiling)
water with a little Woolite (wool soap). Blot gently without rubbing, otherwise
you risk damaging the wool.
For stains difficult to remove, you can also use Vanish carpet spray. For red wine, baking soda with a little white vinegar will also be very effective at absorbing the
stain.
To give your Berber rug a pleasant scent, I use a homemade spray of water with a
little baking soda and a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Note that your
freshly unpacked rug may take a few days to absorb the scent of your home. If you're going on vacation for several months, or if your rug is used to decorate a vacation home that you only occupy for a few months a year, I recommend paying extra attention to the risk of moths between April and September. During this period, moths attracted to wool can enter your home, lay their eggs, and the larvae will then have ample opportunity to make small holes in your rug if it's left unattended and unmaintained for too long. To prevent this problem, the most effective solution is to spray the rug with a repellent before leaving, or even to wrap it carefully if you're going away for a very long time and leave natural repellents like lavender or cedar nearby to keep moths away.
My team regularly checks the rugs, in addition to cleaning and hand-brushing
each Berber rug in the showroom, and as a result, we have never encountered any problems with moths. At my house, my home is covered with carpets in every room and there too, simply vacuuming your Berber carpet regularly is enough to avoid these problems.
How does Tree of Colors select its Berber rugs?
At Tree of Colors, I prioritize long-term relationships with my Moroccan artisans.
Over the years, we have built close ties that allow me to select Berber rugs both remotely, based on photos my artisans send me, and in person with them during my two annual trips to Morocco. My selections are always very simple: I go with my gut feeling. I need to feel something when I see a Berber rug
because I know that feeling will resonate with my clients. While it might seem easy when faced with such works of art, I have learned to carefully choose pieces that you won't find anywhere else. To choose original, colorful, and even daring pieces in the eyes of some more traditional decorators. From my very first trip to Morocco in April 2018, I had the good fortune to meet Mohamed, my main craftsman in Marrakech, who has managed all my custom creations since the very beginning of this adventure. In 2020, Anouar and Badr joined Tree of Colors and, along with Mohamed, became my official partners.
They each have their own unique way of working and offer collections of Berber rugs
that are very different from one another. Mohamed quickly took the lead in bringing all my Berber rug ideas and your custom orders to life. He demonstrated the patience necessary to complete these often much more delicate creations. Together, we selected an excellent quality of wool, which is dyed to order in more than 50 colors in a workshop in Rabat. We also created our own
cooperative of Berber women in the Boujaad region; they are the ones who bring all my designs to life, each knot hand-tied according to their traditions.
Anouar comes from a family of Berber weavers in the Khemisset region. At his workshop, I don't decide on any of the designs, sizes, or colors. The Berber weavers in his cooperative are the true artists. I choose my favorites from among their colorful Beni Ouarain Berber rugs. Each piece is a true work of art.
Badr specializes in Mrirt rugs, the most luxurious Berber rugs in Morocco. He always
offers rugs of excellent quality with a silky-smooth feel. With him, the focus is on original designs rather than bold, vibrant colors. Clean, modern lines that complement a room while adding warmth and authenticity. Badr also helps me select my Boujaad rugs, which are always very lively and colorful pieces.
Because I carefully select my rugs and depend on each artisan's production schedule and seasonality (for example, we work much more slowly during periods
of intense heat and also during Ramadan), the collections don't arrive on a tight schedule. Some take longer to arrive than others, also depending on my carrier's departures from Morocco. Patience goes hand in hand with the richness of Moroccan craftsmanship.
